Everybody hurts.

At the end of the year, right before I turn seventeen, I finally get my period. I’ve only ever heard of tampons, never really having ever seen one, but I know that I need one, so I wander down to the CREPS bathroom outside the common room where everyone still studies and wedge open the metal tampon dispensing machine, reach in, and wedge out a box of them. I have to leave for practice soon, so I kick open a free stall, pull open the instructions while I’m sitting on the toilet, feeling the blood gulp out of me one slug at a time, and don’t understand a thing I’m reading. I do my best and shove one up my splayed cunt. It feels awful and hurts dry burns, not going in all the way. On my mobilette ride up to the pool for practice, it thuds up into my insides, pushing the whole street up into me. I change into my suit—I’m late again—and pad my way through the showers onto the pool deck. I’m the last one in. Gérard looks at me from the other end of the pool. I barely wave at him and look at everyone, already arms and splash swimming back and forth, and then at the time. I’ll have to start the main sets on cold. I hate that.

I get out of the pool that night and talk to Gérard about the practice halfheartedly before leaving the deck like I do every night. I think he knows I’m crying after every practice but neither one of us knows how to talk about it—we’ve already been quiet for so long. I stand in front of him and one of my guy teammates who is next to him, their faces wide and unmoving, not smiling and then smiling. I feel more than water slither down the inside of my thigh like a river. I look down and see a thin line of blood coming out of me. I look up at Gérard. He says nothing and neither does the boy teammate. I stand there until I walk away, splashing my feet quickly through the small foot pool and away from the small translucent red puddle I’ve left behind.
