With Avenger safely inside the Slipstream, Manda, and no doubt everyone else on the ship, breathed a little easier. But with only forty minutes between entry and exit, there was little time to do much other than prepare for what might lie ahead.
Manda descended once again to the well deck, more for something to do than out of need.
âHow long until we exit, Mr. Sen?â she asked.
âTwenty-two minutes, Commander.â
She nodded, clasped her hands behind her back, looked around the well deck, then headed back up to the command deck to update the captain.
It wasnât that she was worried as she ascended the six steps⦠well, she was, just a little. They were headed to yet another anomalous star system, this time a binary: two stars, one a red dwarf, the other a yellow dwarf. Two suns orbiting a common mass. Manda knew why the powers that be back on Orso had chosen these obscure, anomalous systems for their route to Aries. The consensus was that the Swarm wouldnât expect USF presence in such systems and, in ordinary times, they would have been right. But these were not ordinary times.
Thus, once again, the location of the Slipstreams therein was a mystery and this time, there was no time to guestimate. And who knew what they would face once they arrived?
She placed her foot on the top step and was about to reenter the command deck when, suddenly, she felt dizzy. She staggered, almost fell, grabbed the handrail and steadied herself.
âCommander, are you all right?â Morian asked, jumping up from his chair.
âYes⦠yes, Iâm fine.â She wasnât fine at all, but she wasnât going to show weakness in front of the captain and everyone else on the bridge. She had a momentary weird feeling in her stomach, but by the time Morian had reached her it was gone, and so was the dizziness.
He reached out to take her arm and help her up the final step but again, not wanting to show weakness, she lifted her arm to avoid his hand.
She stepped up onto the command bridge and turned to go to the rail and⦠it was then that it hit her. She stopped dead. She had an overwhelming feeling that she knew where the next Slip point would be. Not just the location; she knew the exact coordinates for their exit and the Slip point. She had no explanation, and she knew that for her to know the coordinates was impossible. But she was absolutely certain she was right.
âCommander, are youââ Morian asked.
âI know where the next Slipstream will be,â she said, interrupting him with conviction. She didnât wait for him to respond. She turned again and headed back down onto the well deck and Navigation with Morian close behind.
âMr. DeLong.â
âYes, Commander.â
âPrepare to input coordinates.â
âUh⦠what coordinates, Commander?â
âWeâll be exiting the Slip in sector nine, at five seven zero.â
âWhat? How do you know?â DeLong asked.
âThe next Slip point will be at three-two-two seven-one-six point four. Input that into the system and be ready to execute on my mark.
