Denial

Kafka was barely a car. In fact, it was closer to being a lawn mower. The only thing that made it not a lawn mower was its Volkswagen shape and the fact that it couldn’t cut grass. That, and rather than smelling of freshly cut lawn clippings and pulverized dandelions and earth, the interior smelled like cigarette smoke and french fries and a wet rug that had been frozen and thawed and frozen and thawed and frozen and thawed, over and over again, for a generation. It was the kind of car whose corrosion and decay engendered endearment rather than disgust and, like an old dog, there was the likelihood that once it eventually did die everybody would immediately forget about the stench that oozed green from its exhaust pipe and the viscous brown puddles it left whenever it rested anywhere for more than two minutes, and only remember its tired enthusiasm to please everybody.

It was twenty-two degrees outside on the night before the night before Christmas in 1984 when Darcy Pemberton pulled into the driveway, Kafka’s wheezing guttural enough to vibrate the water in the fish tank and send the cat out of the room, and I grabbed my coat and flew out the front door before my mother had a chance to walk down the hallway and plead with me, using only exquisitely sad eyes and absolute silence for the billionth time that day, to not drop out of college.
