George and Heidi were in the middle of the convoy, heading north on I-25, nearing the little town of Chugwater, Wyoming. George cracked up when he saw the sign.

“Chugwater?”

Heidi giggled. “Yeah, that’s a great name. How’d you like to be from there?”

“Anything going on?”

“Haven’t checked the news. I was looking at ads for burner phones. These will need to be shut off when we get to Casper.”

“Maybe I should turn on the radio.”

“Yeah, maybe Chugwater has a good station.”

“On second thought,” George said.

“Stop. At least we have LTE. Oh, crap.”

“What?”

“Wasn’t the other team on I-15?”

“Yeah. What do you see?”

“Two thugs showed up at a Walmart in Mesquite, Nevada, with Mac 10s.”

George shot her a glance. “How many did they kill?”

“None. Somebody shot them before they could get into the back door. They were pretending to be Walmart truck drivers.”

“Shit,” George said. “Wonder if our people were involved?”

“Want me to call General Hogan?”

“Yeah, and put it on speaker.”

She hit the contact. It rang twice.

“Heidi?” General Hogan asked.

“Yeah. Did you see the news story about men with Mac 10s at a Walmart in Mesquite, Nevada?”

“No,” he said with a worried tone. “That’s where Ivan’s team was spending the night. I’d better give them a call.”

“Good idea,” George said.

“Talk to you soon.” The call ended.

“You think it’s related to the other team?”

“I’d be surprised if it’s not,” George said. “Didn’t expect trouble this fast.”

Heidi’s phone rang. “It’s the General.” She answered the call and put it on speaker again.

“Can’t raise anybody on Ivan’s team.”

“I was afraid of that,” Heidi said.

“Doesn’t mean they’ve been killed,” George said. “I’ll bet they turned their phones off.”

“Very possible,” General Hogan said. “I think it’s time to turn ours off. We all know where we’re stopping. I’ll broadcast a text telling everybody to shut down their phones right now. We’ll get the burners at our destination.”

“We’ll shut ours down now,” Heidi said. She ended the call and powered down. George fished his phone out and tossed it to her. “Please?”

She nodded, powering his phone down, setting both on the center console.

“I’m glad you checked the news,” George said, glancing at her.

“You think they’re okay?”

“They’re fine. Anything happening with them is gonna make the news big time.”

“Why?”

George chuckled. “Because of what they’re traveling in. They’ve all got those battle wagons.”

“Oh. Yeah, I could see that.”

“This sucks. Now I feel really cut off.”

“We can see his rig, three ahead of us.”

George nodded. “I wasn’t just talking about Malcolm.”

“Sure you weren’t,” Heidi said, shooting a smirk at him. “Do you know all the people on the other team?”

“I know some, and have heard of others. Most of them are at least a friend of a friend.”

“Who do you know?”

“Ted, Sam, Sparky, Tex, Jules, and Cody. Sam and I were really close, but I was friends with all of them.”

“What about Ivan?”

George laughed. “Last time I saw him, I was attempting to take him out. Hope he doesn’t hold a grudge.”

“Really? Why?”

“The US Government didn’t exactly like him.”

“What did he do to
