Chapter 19

A loud knock at the door interrupted the moment. I went to open it and gave a loud squeal of delight. I all but leapt into my best friend’s arms. ‘Lucy!’

She dropped her duffle bag and threw her arms around me. ‘I’m here. Where’s the fire?’

‘Fucking everywhere,’ I muttered into her shoulder. ‘Help.’

She drew back in surprise. ‘I can count on one hand the number of times you’ve asked for help.’

‘Apparently I’m stubborn.’

She grinned at me. ‘Wouldn’t have you any other way.’

‘Come in. I’ve got a lot to tell you,’ I said.

She picked up her duffle and followed me in. It wasn’t fair; she’d been jerked out of bed early, come in a hurry, and she still looked pristine. No make-up, sure, but her golden hair was as perfect as always, her jeans were clean and her cute blouse looked ironed.

I could always count on Lucy. The world could implode but she’d always turn up when I called, and she’d always look a million dollars. Something in me eased. The world was topsy-turvy, but she was here.

I popped my head into the lounge. ‘Lucy’s here. I’m just going to take her upstairs and fill her in on a few things.’

‘Can she be trusted?’ Manners asked levelly.

I glared. ‘Of course she can!’

‘You said everyone’s on the list.’

‘Everyone who knew Jake’s location. She didn’t know it, so she’s not on the list. She’s as far away from the list as you can get.’

‘I don’t mind being tested,’ Lucy interjected. ‘I’d rather you know for sure that I can be trusted one hundred percent.’

‘I do know that.’ I glared at Manners some more.

‘I don’t,’ Manners argued. ‘If you’re bringing her into the circle of trust, test her.’

‘Fine,’ I conceded angrily. ‘But I don’t like you right now.’

‘I don’t rightly care,’ he retorted. Lie.

That broke through to me. He was only protecting Emory and, by extension, me. I deflated. ‘Sorry,’ I muttered. ‘I’ll test her, then I’ll tell her. Come on, Luce, let’s go upstairs.’

Gato rose and then hesitated. I rolled my eyes. ‘Yeah, you lot may as well come too.’ He wagged and thundered up to my bedroom. Lucy and I followed at a more sedate pace then settled on my bed to talk.

‘I’m sorry to ask all these questions,’ I started awkwardly.

‘Just shoot, Jess, then we can get onto the meaty stuff.’

‘Sure. Did you know or tell anyone where Jake Winters lived?’

‘No.’ True.

‘Are you loyal to me?’

‘Yes,’ Lucy responded firmly. True.

‘Have you passed on sensitive knowledge to any third parties?’

‘No.’ True.

‘Have you told anyone about my whereabouts?’

‘No. I told Lord Samuel I was coming to meet you, but I didn’t say where. We shared a ride up here, but I dropped him off in Liverpool. He said he had pack business.’ True.

‘You passed. Now, let’s get on to the nitty-gritty.’ I told her in greater detail about the attempts on my life and my belief that there was more to them than met the eye. I told her about the ouroboros, and finally I told her about Jake and Faltease’s Fallen.
