Anne Sweeney
WOMAN OF THE YEAR 2005
Anne Sweeneyââthe most powerful woman in entertainment,â according to the Hollywood Reporterâwas not afraid of a comeback challenge. When she took over as president of Disney-ABC Television Group, in 2004, the network was lagging behind in both ratings and cool factor. (The only ABC show in the top 10? Monday Night Football.) In just a year under her tenure, ABC was in the top three. More important, she changed the television landscape for women for good: While she was president, ABC developed groundbreaking series like Greyâs Anatomy and Desperate Housewives, forever proving that shows with dynamic women front and center can be ratings gold.
Her famed âsane, ego-free managementâ style, as Glamour praised in 2005, also helped in her success. âI feel very comfortable in the world of [asking], âWhat do you think?ââ she explained in her profile interview. That willingness to collaborate and listen to ideas made her open to forward-thinking technologyâlike, for example, when she led ABC-Disney to become one of the first studios to put content on Netflix. (A prescient move: Sweeney was named a director on the streaming serviceâs board in 2015, a role she still holds as of July 2020.)
But perhaps the most inspirational aspect of Sweeney was her willingness to challenge not just the networks she runs but also herself. In 2014 she shocked Hollywood when she announced that, at age 56, she was stepping down from ABC-Disney to focus on becoming a television director. Such a career shift was unprecedented in the industry, but Sweeney welcomed the new creative pursuit. âDo the things that scare you the most,â she said in her announcement. That passion and adaptability are what made her a Glamour Woman of the Year.
