Gladwynn ran her fingertips along the spines of the used books on the shelves of the bookshop and thought about how she escaped into a book, way too often when she didn’t want to deal with her life. Today she was avoiding phone calls from her parents, worrying about Lucinda and the man she was seeing, and delaying unpacking the rest of her clothes from her suitcases. She should have done that two months ago, but there was something holding her back—maybe the fact part of her really wasn’t sure if she wanted to make the stay permanent. She was still getting used to working for the newspaper and adjusting to the varying personalities of her co-workers.

Gladwynn’s hand stopped on a copy of Little Women, which she’d been meaning to read for years. Harry looked up as she approached the register.

Returning the smile he gave her, she thought about how he looked like he should be in high school.

Harry took the book from her. “Back again, are we? This is getting to be a habit for you.”

She slid the book across the counter and shrugged her shoulder. “There are a worse habits, I suppose.”

“True, true.” He rang the book up and handed it back to her. “You’re my last customer today, Miss Grant. We’re closing early, so I get to have the afternoon off to actually read a book instead of sell them.”

She took the bag he’d slipped the book in. “Any reason for the early closure?”

“You hadn’t heard? Marylou’s daughter is getting married today.”

“Oh, that’s right.” Gladwynn snapped her fingers. “Abbie did mention that. You weren’t invited?”

He laughed. “No. I’m just the renter. I don’t really know them well enough. Plus, I’m not big on crowded social situations.”

She looked through the bookshop doorway into the café. “Well, if the bookshop is closing early, I guess the café will be too. Looks like I’ll have to try the Daisy Diner today for lunch. Have you ever eaten there before?”

Harry nodded as he locked the register. “I have dinner there every evening, actually. I highly recommend the fried fish.”

The later afternoon sun was leaving streaks of rectangular gold across the cases of books. “If you don’t have anything else to do, you’re welcome to join me.”

Harry hesitated, biting the inside of his lip for a brief moment as his gaze drifted toward the exit. “Um, yeah. That would be nice. I was just heading home to open up a can of Spaghetti-os.”

Gladwynn made a face. “That sounds awful.” She gestured toward the exit. “Come on. You can join me. My treat.”

Daisy Diner was designed to look like an old-time drive-in diner. Gladwynn had visited it a few times with her grandparents and parents growing up but hadn’t been inside it since she’d moved to town. She had, however, watched Lucinda walk inside it a couple of weeks ago with her mystery man.
