Chapter 11

Day 155 of the re-emerged Hat Island pack, Friday, Nov. 8, I-5 north to Bellingham.

“OK, which one of you wants to go first?” Abby asked her van full of men. She was going to get some answers, and a road trip up I-5 might be as private a time as any. “Benny? You have a brother? And you say he took care of whoever roughed up his mother in Okanogan. Does that mean what I think it does? What’s going on up there? Does he know?”

Benny sighed. “Well, Naomi moved back onto the reservation when Dad ‘died,’” he said. “That was shortly after Ryder successfully went through first shift. So 30 years ago? Dad reinvented himself as a younger nephew who was willing to be there for the now-fatherless son. It gets damned difficult, you know? Keeping all of that straight. I was working for the Council by then and had been declared a lone wolf. Ryder is still part of the pack, however.”

“You’re rambling,” Cujo said. “Could you get to the point about why the Penticton pack would be interested in the Okanogan? I can’t say that either place has that much to offer.”

Benny snorted. “Rugged mountains that draw hikers and hunters, that’s about it,” he said. “I don’t know why the Penticton Alpha would want to expand, but it looks like he does. And he saw the chance with Dad gone.”

“Your Dad’s been gone for what? Four months?” Abby asked. “Where is his pack Second?”

“I’m guessing he’s dead,” Benny replied. “It’s really the only way any of this makes sense. I think Dad left him in charge of the pack when he went off to do whatever the hell he’s doing. And someone took him out. Penticton would be my guess, at this point. As for why?” Benny shrugged. “The Alpha there is looking for revenge and power. But he’s not all that smart. I’m guessing someone else is doing the thinking.”

“That’s a lot of guessing,” Jake observed.

“Yeah,” Benny said with a sigh. “And as a former intelligencer, that’s a painful admission.”

“That’s what happened last time,” Okami said from the far back seat. “We should have killed him, Haru and I. But neither of us had any desire to be Alpha of a no-account pack hundreds of miles from any place we wanted to be. So we let him live. A mistake obviously.”

“He was involved in kidnapping Yui and Haru,” Abby said, enlightened.

“Yes,” Okami said. “I do not believe it was his idea. He just supplied the manpower. It was actually a fairly large pack back then — it’s a perfect place for a pack. Remote, plenty of room to run, but a good-sized town for jobs and supplies. Chairman Johannsen and Anton Vuk were behind the plot, although we didn’t have enough proof to accuse them. But we decimated that pack. The Alpha probably sees taking the wolves of the Okanogan as a way to regroup. But I’m sure someone else suggested it.”

“I agree,” Benny said. “And some of Chen’s recruits are probably young men from that pack as well.
