The detective’s ponytail was pomaded into submission in a professional-looking low bun, this time, probably to beat the bora’s effect, but the puppy look was still there. Only, this time, there was nothing benevolent in the way Ademi cornered Freddie in a remote section of the viewing platform, drilling him in a low voice.

The expression in Ivan’s eyes, as he watched the detective talk to his partner from a distance, almost made Lina reconsider her earlier conclusion regarding Ivan’s murder instincts—and the lack of them.

When the detective at long last let Freddie go, the dark-haired man regarded his partner with a gloomy look and shook his head at the careful concern in Karol’s face. In under a minute, the two men had gone from the platform, indubitably on their way back to the Prodan manor.

After a short few words with his officers, the detective walked straight at Lina and Karol.

“I do believe we’ve met before, but… have we been introduced?” he asked, offering both of them a tired, but polite smile. “I understand you were there when Mr. Novak was found?”

“My name is Karol Malnar,” Karol spoke first, “daughter of the Prodans.”

“I’m Lina Malnar,” Lina added, using, as was her habit lately, the shortened, distinctive version of her actual Karolina. “I’m, uh, not a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Prodan.”

The detective’s bright brown eyes focused on her. “How come?”

“We were raised separately,” Karol said in an impatient tone. “Is there anything you need from us, detective?”

“I was wondering if one of you might fill some voids in Mr. Frederick’s version of events,” he said.

“You mean, the actual events?”

“Mr. Frederick seems to be vague on a few details,” he replied calmly, bringing back a bit of the puppy experience. To already be ranking so high in the force—Lina didn’t believe him much older than herself, if not younger—and keep the genial appearance, he must have been very good at his job.

“Such as?”

“Well, why Mr. Novak didn’t stay here at the platform, with the rest of you, as per the initial agreement with Mr. and Mrs. Prodan.”

“He’d left on his own,” Lina offered, “without a word. But none of the others were here at that time, actually. Only the four of us remained.”

“I see. And have you been here the whole time?”

“I was in the booth in the back for a while,” Karol said, pointing with her thumb.

“The three of us were right here,” Lina said. “I’d come too close to the edge, since everything was so… big. I wouldn’t have seen the body otherwise.”

“Was there anything peculiar about the body?”

“I didn’t even know it was a body,” Lina said, gulping. “I thought someone was in trouble.”

“Quite a bit of it, as it turned out.” He focused on Karol. “Is everything in order regarding the turbines?”

“As much as it can be,” Karol said tersely, “since they’d never even worked properly in the first place, and we still need to shut down the remaining four.”

“Indeed. It’s such a waste, if you ask me,” he said.
