Jake’s eyes were on the taillights in front of him. He gripped the wheel, reminding himself to slow down. Jo made contact with the owners. The recording would be there waiting for them. No reason to drive like a madman.

“Were you and Dana ever more than partners?”

Jo’s unexpected question nearly made him swerve into the other lane. Keeping his eyes on the road, he shook his head.

“Then I guess I don’t have to ask if you’re more than that now.”

This time Jake glanced at her. “Why would you think that?”

She shrugged. “I saw you two at the hospital. You looked … close, that’s all.”

“We are close. You know better than anyone how this line of work bonds people.”

“Dana’s not in our line of work.”

“I know. That makes this harder for her.”

“How do you mean?”

“She didn’t choose this life, it chose her, and no one prepared her for what it’s like … hunting monsters, pulling a trigger. She took someone’s life today and almost lost a friend. Guilt is weighing on her. Finding a way to live with that isn’t going to be easy for her.”

“I’d be worried if it was.”

Jake exhaled and grabbed a piece of gum from the center console, popping it in his mouth. “All I’m trying to say is, today was hard on her. I was just trying to be a good friend.”

Jo reached over and squeezed his hand. “You are a good friend, Shepard. She’s lucky to have you. Maybe we can have her out once we get settled in Denver.”

Tugging at his seatbelt, Jake fought the claustrophobia settling over him. “Yeah. Maybe.”

“Getting out of the city always does me some good,” Jo quipped, gazing out the window. “Ah, here we are,” she said as he pulled up to the address she’d given him.

“I’m coming in with you.” It wasn’t a question.

Jo heard the conviction in his voice and was smart enough not to waste time arguing. “Fine, but let me do the talking.”

“No problem.”

She inhaled, and he knew she was letting the adrenaline of the unknown fuel her. He did the same. Jo gave him a wink as they walked toward the house. “Let’s make these next forty-eight hours count.”

He didn’t need to be reminded that with each passing hour the trail was getting colder. It’s why he was out here running on empty. He spit out his gum and finished the rest of his coffee, which was now cold. What he really needed was sleep, but even as tired as he was, he knew when he closed his eyes, sleep wouldn’t come. It never did when he had a case like this.

He’d spent the last few nights staring at his ceiling, his mind juggling the few pieces of the puzzle he had. His head felt like a snow globe, shaking up clues and letting them land over and over to see if he could make something fit. Rival mobs, drugs, prostitutes, playing cards, tarot cards, headless thugs, body dumps, kink clubs, and now a dead tattoo artist.
