Sadness at the Shelter
âIâm feeling much better,â Amy assured Heather as she sat in the passenger seat of Heatherâs car. âI can talk to the other suspect with you guys. Really.â
âI think you are more yourself now,â Heather agreed. âBut Ryan and Peters are still trying to find date #2.â
âIf theyâre having this much trouble finding the guy whose first name and job we know, how will we be able to find #3?â Amy quipped.
âWeâll figure out a way,â Heather said. âBut I did think of something that we could do while weâre waiting. We can look at the dogs that Lee was thinking of adopting.â
âIâm happy to play with the pups,â Amy said. âBut do you think that could have any real bearing on the murder?â
âIt might have something to do with Leeâs state of mind recently,â Heather said. âRemember how Sara told us that Lee would have to make a decision about which dog to adopt soon because of the adoption event? She seemed distracted after she realized this and Tracy was concerned about her. Maybe this decision affected other aspects of her life, and that could relate to the reason why someone attacked her.â
Amy shrugged. âThis seems more like an excuse to play with the dogs. But if thereâs a chance it will help with the case, then Iâm game. And it will let me check that everything is still going well with Santa Paws. Because I really do need to find Prince a good home.â
âWeâre almost there,â Heather said.
She finished making the final turn onto the street where the animal shelter was, and found a parking spot. The volunteers were there were bustling around, but some of the joviality they experienced on their previous visit was missing.
âHeather, Amy,â Sara said when she saw them. âAre you here to help out?â
âWeâre actually working on the case right now,â Heather said. âTrying to figure out what happened to Lee.â
âSara,â the volunteer Vicky said, interrupting them. âIâm not sure what to do. Butch CassiFlea keeps drooling on his sweater. And I donât think thatâs the look weâre going for.â
Heather noticed a bandage on Vickyâs arm and wondered if that wasnât all that Butch CassiFlea was doing. She hoped that he wasnât a biter.
âThere might be a festive bib that we can put on him,â Sara said. âIt would let a potential family know that he drools sometimes, but it is cute.â
âOkay. Iâll do that.â Then Vicky turned to the others. âItâs good to see you again. Those donuts you brought before were wonderful. You donât happen to have any more, do you?â
âIâm afraid not at the moment,â said Heather.
âTheyâre here as members of their other profession,â Sara explained. âTheyâre private investigators too. And theyâre trying to figure out who hurt Lee.â
âI didnât realize you were investigators. But we all have been so sad all day since we heard what happened to Lee. I tried to cheer everyone up and brought in chocolate covered pretzels. Though I know your donuts would have been better.
