Washington, D.C.

Mara surveyed her handiwork. She had programmed her small cell phone with six cell phone numbers set to speed dial under numbers eleven through sixteen. For the third time, she checked to make sure that she had entered each number correctly including the special access code, a three-number prefix that prevented any accidental call to that number.

Satisfied that all was in order, she pressed the down volume button for a full fifteen seconds to deactivate the self-destruct but counted an additional ten seconds to be sure. She then took out the battery from her special phone and put it in the charger. The phone itself was returned to a bedside table where it lay next to a pretty jewelry box. There, it would wait until the day it was needed. She took a sip of her ice-cold chocolate milk. She loved the taste and took another, longer sip. It was almost seven pm and it was at that precise time, every twenty-four hours, that Scheznyk would call and check in.

The previous night, Mara had reported that Scheznyk, for the first time in their joint operation, had not reported in on schedule or since. Mara had called the designated telephone number and extension at the Russian Embassy where she had stated, “I’ve not received my visa.” This information that Scheznyk had missed her routine call was flashed to the Kremlin. Tonight, Mara hoped that her counterpart would call in, but the clock now read well after seven. Mara continued to watch TV until the show ended. At eight pm, she slid off the bed, assembled her phone, and called the Russian Embassy.

“Nu?”

“I have not received my visa.”

“Not yet? My apology. I will check on it and call you back.” She closed the call and retrieved more chocolate milk. She was angry and pensive.

The Americans have probably captured or killed her. Damn that Douglas woman!

Inwardly, Mara hoped that she would be granted the mission of eliminating Gillian Douglas after she had killed the President. Three more days! She was excited at the prospect. The plan was perfect, and her escape undoubtedly assured.

No one will suspect me. I will escape before they realize it!

She picked up the mirror from the bedside table and examined her appearance. A young African face stared back at her.

We will make the substitution and I will wait to strike!

She went into the bathroom, ran the bath, and added some bubble bath. Draining her chocolate milk, she rinsed the glass in the sink, and then removed her clothing. She clambered into the tub and lay back letting the warm water soothe her aching muscles. Closing her eyes, she began to rehearse her big day and the assassination of President Susan B. Anthony.

Not far away, Lorraine and I arrived at our hotel and checked in to a large suite, then calling the White House to inform them of our location. The twelve members of the SEALs checked in, four to a room. The word was to rest and to sleep.
