A Place for Me

Working for the Korrigan Trust Library was the very thing that my parents had feared. In their minds, it was the Trust Library that had gotten my cousin’s parents killed.

It had been an anniversary picnic. My uncle and his wife had wanted to privately renew their vows beside the dolmens that signified the portal opening on my grandfather’s ranch. To be fair, it was a beautiful spot to picnic at. Unfortunately, portals can be dormant for years and then without warning become functional. This is what happened. As my uncle romanced my aunt, the portal spit out something that tore my aunt literally limb from limb. My uncle died preventing the demon from accessing the main house where my cousins lay napping watched over by my grandfather and my aunt. By the time they arrived at the portal, it was too late to save my uncle. The incident when investigated by the local Sheriff was tagged as a suicide-murder. No one in the family told them any different. What was the point? No one would have believed them anyway.

Aunt Ravinia stepped in to raise my orphan cousins and I wondered if that was the reason she’d never married. My father had been the next in line to inherit and I often wondered what my life would have been like if he hadn’t renounced magic. When he did, my Aunt took his place. He always said Ravinia was better suited for the position that he was, but I had often wondered about it. My Aunt dripped power, but my father and mother had possessed powerful gifts as well. Had his sacrifice been worth it and could I now just toss that sacrifice aside?

It was more complicated than a matter of dishonoring my parents. I had paranormal gifts that often went haywire. Even in my law practice I had to invent an illness to explain away my disabling visions. I needed to learn to handle them and to protect myself from those that would misuse me. That was an essential fact that I couldn’t get away from. If I was going to be a target, then living as a mundane was just not going to work.

I would work for the Trust at least long enough to lean what I needed to know.
