High plains desert outside of Pocatello.

“So they never found him?” Jerry inquired, his interest sparked.

“Well, that is where the story gets weird.” The good-humored tone had left Mark’s voice and was replaced with a somber pause as he gripped the steering wheel. He had a vacant stare as his eyes scanned the highway. “You see, they looked for him for weeks. People from all over Southeast Idaho helped in the search by donating food, water and horses. Many volunteers came out to the desert and looked for him on foot. There was no trace of the boy.” Mark scratched his head nervously as he continued. “There was a man who had come out to the desert to help in the search. He was camping out there, and he had a dream one night. He said the boy came to him in his dream and showed him where he was. The next morning, the man got up and went to a crevice near the Crystal Ice Cave. The fissure led into the cave, and he followed it down. When he reached the bottom, the first thing he saw was a leg sticking out from under a large crack in the cave wall. The man knew it was the boy because he had been wearing rolled-up blue jeans, white socks and Nike running shoes when he went missing. Unfortunately, the boy had died of exposure. Since then, people say the spirit of the boy haunts the cave. People claim they hear his voice, and others even claim to have seen him.”

“Yeah, and Dad’s friends saw him, and now they won’t go back in the cave anymore,” Bill exclaimed in his animated voice.

“Now Bill, that’s enough,” Mark scolded. “My friend Sanju is an avid spelunker. Last fall, he was going down into the cave when he claims to have seen something. I don’t know what he saw, but he goes to other locations now to have his fun. I think it best we get off this subject before we get too caught up in superstitions.”

The rest of the drive was filled with fun and laughter. Everyone in the truck soon forgot about the strange story of the lost boy in the desert. The group exited the interstate at American Falls and headed toward Aberdeen. Halfway to Aberdeen, they turned onto a sportsman access, which quickly changed from a paved to a dirt road. The desert soon appeared out from the miles of potato fields. In the distance, a large lava rock hill could be seen getting closer. As the pickup pulled up to the desolate hill, Deb felt a shiver go down her spine. It surprised her because it was a beautiful day and everything seemed fine.

The group got out and unpacked their gear. Mark led them to the far side of the hill and pushed the sagebrush out of the way. There on the hillside was a large metal dome. Mark and Bill pulled it off to one side, exposing a large vertical hole.
