CHAPTER 11

THE FELINE SPECTER OF HOBBY CENTRAL

You would logically assume that a ghost or spirit is a person who has passed over to the other side after death. But what about our pets? It is comforting to know that our furry friends, who have provided our homes with joy and who have given us their unconditional love for all of these years, do have souls and—at one time or another—come back to us. Such is the case with Benny, a Siamese cat who resided within the confines of Hobby Central since 1995.

Hobby Central is a retail establishment that provides hobby enthusiasts with everything associated with coin collecting, wood sculpting kits, plastic modeling, comic book collecting, baseball, football and basketball card collecting, trains, War Hammer gaming and so on. It is a popular store for both the young and old alike. It’s located in the Troy Road Shopping Center off Central Avenue.

Hobby Central was started on September 17, 1992, by Jamie Long and Craig Semon. The store was first located at 77 North Sandusky Street, across from the Moose Lodge. The establishment was relocated to the Troy Road Shopping Center on July 5, 1994. The reason for the move was to increase the size of the store and be located in an area with better parking. It was situated beside Delaware Antiques Limited, which was owned and operated by Patricia “Pat” Greene. Pat owned two Siamese cats named Mecaff and Ming. The cats did not live with Pat at her residence but in her store. The cats were between the ages of seven and nine at the time. In 1995, Pat retired and gave the cats to Jamie and Craig. Later, Mecaff was renamed Benny and Ming was renamed Bobby. Both cats craved attention. Every time a customer would enter the store, both of them would compete to see who would be petted first. Bobby was the most aggressive in getting the attention he wanted, but soon the patron’s attention would shift to Benny due to his distinctive sound he made when he meowed. When Bobby passed away, Benny had the store all to himself. It was at this time when he started to come out of his shell and claim ownership of the store. Over the years, Benny’s health began to deteriorate. In 2009, at the age of twenty-one, Benny was put down. A lot of people were saddened over his passing. But this cat had ten lives.
