Chapter 17

Gar walked straight to the liquor cabinet in his library. What a hellish night! He poured his best brandy to the rim of the glass and took a healthy sip before retreating to his favorite chair. He’d desperately wanted to tell Senna he loved her, but couldn’t. Not now, not ever…unless Brendon gave her up. But why would anyone give up Senna?

The temperature dropped in the room and the hairs on his neck rose. “Leave me alone, Lassier, I’m in no mood for your company.”

The ghost materialized on the couch. “I know, but you have need of my counsel.”

Gar took a heavy swallow of his drink. “The day I listen to your counsel will be the day I die.”

“I’ll have good advice for you then, as well. However, I have a solution to your current intolerable situation, if you’ll indulge me for a few minutes.”

“Nothing needs solved. We’ll get Senna’s record sealed, she’ll marry Brendon, and what will be, will be.”

“Your solution will make everyone quite miserable.” Lassier disappeared and then rematerialized in the chair next to Gar. “Senna would make a wonderful mother. Only she intends to keep her marriage with Brendon unconsummated so his infidelities cannot hurt her.”

Gar’s muscles tensed at his words. “I hope she’s successful. I would not wish her pain for the world.” Unfortunately, he expected Senna would eventually fall for Brendon and live a life of pure misery.

“Even if it means the end of the family line? Which it will, unless you intend to find a more obliging wife.”

“I’ll find no wife to suit me now. You might as well face it, Lassier, the Durran line has come to an end.”

Lassier leaned forward. “I fear you’re correct, unless you stop being a fool and marry Senna. A marriage between the two of you would beget many fine offspring.”

Gar closed his eyes and took a long sip of his drink before replying, “I’m not stealing my brother’s fiance.”

“Commendable, but short-sighted. Your path leads to misery for all three of you. I’ve a better solution.”

“I know I’ll regret asking, but what is it?”

A pleased smiled formed on the ghost’s face. “Bring home the perfect woman for Brendon. He’ll fall in love with the girl, leaving you and Senna to marry with both of your overly rigid consciences intact.”

Gar downed the remainder of his drink and slammed the glass onto the side table. “Brendon has already found the perfect woman.”

Lassier shook his head. “For you. Not for Brendon. He needs a young lady with a nature more in line with his own playful, lascivious spirit.”

Gar threw his hands up in frustration. “And where am I supposed to find this enticement?”

With a smile of great satisfaction, he replied. “I’ve already found her. You simply need to bring her home.”
