Notes on personal statement
⢠A very good level of relevant work experience.
⢠Includes a variety of experiences and, importantly, what was learnt from them.
⢠Shows commitment.
⢠Shows an understanding â and value â of research.
⢠A little too narrative in places.
⢠Starts to read a little like a shopping list when the zoo is mentioned, and that paragraph could have been further developed to illustrate the difference between the types of animals cared for in a zoo versus those in a small veterinary practice.

Standing knee-deep in mud, desperately trying to prevent an embryo from defrosting as the local vet manoeuvred a heifer into the crush, is perhaps my most vivid memory of my placement in Ireland. However it was in that crucial moment, despite the torrential rain and the angry cows, that I realised that the prospect of a career in veterinary medicine provided enough drive to overcome the significant hurdles that pursuing it would present.
In pursuit of a career in this field, I have explored all aspects of veterinary medicine, from the highs of bringing new life into the world during lambing season to the lows of euthanasia within a small practice. From working on a 22,000 sow unit to implanting over 100 CIDRS on a cattle farm, I am constantly left in awe at the intricate complexity of animal biology. These placements have demonstrated a wide array of possibilities in terms of an ultimate career choice, and the refined skill set I will need to develop to excel within them. My weekly placement at my local practice has allowed me to develop practical skills such as bandaging, intubation and suturing, as well as allowing me to effectively deal with patients as well as owners in sensitive situations. The future of veterinary medicine excites me; the possibilities of biomechanics and new developments in oncology that I witnessed while attending specialist lectures at congress were particularly fascinating. Most recently, I volunteered at a wildlife sanctuary in Australia which allowed me to work alongside native fauna and research one of Australiaâs most prevalent animal diseases, Koala Retrovirus. This enabled me to consider developing treatment concepts against the slow metabolic rate and increased antibiotic half-life of koalas, such as nano-medicine, and how this could allow for an effective way of treating koalas suffering from a compromised immune system to be discovered.
By studying biology, I have been able to develop a strong understanding of physiology, from the basis of movement through antagonistic muscle action to resistance against infection by the immune system. In practice, I have witnessed the importance of having a strong scientific knowledge in order to recognise symptoms and act accordingly in terms of diagnostics and treatment. Studying chemistry has enlightened me to the intricate nature of pharmacology, and how the precise structural formula of a drug is so important to the outcome of the patient. The significant development of my problem-solving skills through the study of chemistry will also prove to be undoubtedly useful when facing the diagnostic puzzles of veterinary medicine.
