Be Consistent

It is up to you to cultivate a consistent environment. Your team doesn’t want to be surprised by the actions or behavior of their boss any more than you want to be surprised by your boss. (Although, if you want to surprise them with a happy hour, go for it!) People want to understand what to expect and be able to project how various situations will be handled.

This need for consistency applies to all levels of employees. However, it’s especially important for managers and anyone in a leadership position. Years ago, I had a coworker who was very open about her personal life. On the weekends, she enrolled in various self-development courses, which she shared with our entire team. Our boss was also in the loop and appeared supportive. Seeing this support was a big deal for everyone. It demonstrated that not only was the focus on coursework outside of work okay, but it was also okay for us to share personal information about ourselves with one another.
