Chapter Sixteen

Unbelievably Pathetic

Cole

Noticing Dean raise his eyebrow at me, smirk affixed to his face, I reluctantly released Danny from the hug. Then I ignored Dean and set about making even more of an arse of myself in front of the woman to whom I’d sent a shirtless picture the night before.

“You smell really good.” It wasn’t until the words were out of my mouth that I wondered if they were a little disquieting. I wasn’t sniffing her or anything – the scent just wafted around me – but I hoped what I’d said wouldn’t make her uneasy.

“Thanks,” she said with a little laugh. She didn’t sound nervous so I counted that as a win. “I’m glad I’m not all sweaty or you’d regret that hug big time.”

“Maybe I love sweat.” So happy those words left my mouth. The rest of the guys seemed to be dazzled by my smooth talking too if the expressions on their faces were anything to go by.

“Given how we met up the second time, I guess that works out in my favour. I should probably explain. The reason I smell OK now, not sweaty – I hope – is because I just got changed in Dean’s room so I wasn’t in my travel clothes. I left my bag there because I was going to get my own room but they were fully booked, so –”

“Dean’s room?” I raised an eyebrow at him, annoyed and not entirely sure why that was the case.

She nodded. “Yeah. Sorry, I know it’s weird that I turned up at your hotel with luggage and without warning you I was coming, but I wasn’t hunting you down or anything. I just thought –”

“Nice of him to let you use his room.” I knew I was being a dick. And weird. A weird dick. But I couldn’t help it. Danny had undressed in Dean’s room. If anything more than a quick change of clothes had taken place I was going to do something drastic. I wasn’t much of a fighter, so I guess I’d have to hit Dean with the silent treatment. That’d show him.

Danny shifted uncomfortably. Crap. I’d made her feel awkward. “Uh, yeah. But I’m happy to go to a different hotel or whatever. I didn’t mean to just show up and dump this on you.”

“I told Danny not to be silly because you ended up getting upgraded to a suite so you have a spare room anyway,” Dean said, his gaze sharp.

Oh. Right. He hadn’t been trying to get her to stay with him. He’d been trying to get her to stay with me. Given what he’d said to me yesterday, I suppose that made more sense.

“Of course. Stay with me tonight. In the spare room.”

“It’s OK if you want me to go. I know it probably seems ominous, me showing up unannounced like I want to collect your chest hair for witchcraft or something while you sleep –”

“I don’t want you to go. Really. Stay.” Fingers crossed that sounded charming and not like I was ordering her around.
