GERONIMO’S ADVERSARIES: BRITTON DAVIS, ARMY OFFICER (JUNE 4, 1860–JANUARY 23, 1930)

Born at Brownsville, Texas, Davis graduated from West Point in 1881. He joined the 3rd Cavalry and was sent to Arizona. Crook put Davis in charge of Apache scouts, a job Davis performed well. From 1881 until 1885, Davis tried to keep the peace with the hostile Apache, like Geronimo, who kept leaving and returning to the reservations of the Arizona territory. In 1885 Davis and Al Sieber, Crook’s chief of scouts, embarked on a perilous and grueling expedition into the Sierra Madre of Sonora, Mexico, after Geronimo and his rogue Chiricahua band. Davis chronicled his experiences in the book The Truth about Geronimo. After failing to bring in Geronimo, Davis resigned from the army in 1886. For the next two decades he managed the Corralitos Mining and Cattle Company in western Chihuahua, Mexico, amassing a fortune of nearly a million dollars. He lost his entire fortune, however, in the Mexican Revolution. He moved to San Diego, California, in 1924, where he wrote his book about his time chasing Geronimo. He died in 1930.
