CHAPTER THIRTEEN
The smell of breakfast roused me from my slumber, my stomach grumbling with hunger. At some point during the night, I had taken two ibuprofen from the bottle on the nightstand next to me, which I assumed Landon had strategically placed there before we passed out. I tentatively stretched, waiting for the body aches that followed a night of drinking to remind me that I was too old to partake in that, but nothing happened. Wiggling my limbs, I was shocked to realize I felt okay, albeit tired. Pulling the covers away from my body, I saw I was still shirtless. Did I dare?
Feeling clear-headed and somehow maintaining some of the braveness I had last night while drunk, I decided that yes, I did dare. Pausing to mouthwash and finger-comb my hair in Landonâs bathroom, I made my way out to the kitchen wearing only a bra and his pajama bottoms. To my delight, he was also still shirtless, frying up eggs and bacon over the stove. Two slices of bread were sitting patiently in the toaster, waiting to be burnt to perfection. His hair was disheveled, and a pair of pajama bottoms clung to his hips.
Coming up behind him, I placed my hands on both of his biceps and leaned into him.
âI donât think itâs safe for you to cook bacon shirtless,â I whispered.
He moved his head to kiss me. âItâs definitely not. Iâve already had a few grease casualties. But itâs worth it now.â He slid us away from the stove before wrapping his arms around me and gently pushing his tongue into my mouth. The warmth from last night instantly returned, and my legs felt wobbly.
After a few seconds, the bacon began to angrily pop and sizzle on the skillet. Landon sighed and gave me a final kiss before refocusing his attention on the food. âDid you sleep okay?â
Sitting on my barstool, I nodded. âThe liquids and the drugs you left on the nightstand? Both were a very good call. Iâm feeling much better than I should, thanks to you.â I watched him while he cooked, admiring his toned back and shoulders.
As he offloaded some bacon onto a nearby plate, he half turned to look at me. âDid you and Charles date long before you got pregnant with Raegan?â
His question made me second-guess my decision to stay shirtless, as discussing my history with Charles wasnât exactlyâ¦romantic. âA grand total of two months, I believe? And Iâm not sure you could even call it dating. Casually sleeping with is probably more accurate. Of course, I wasnât on birth control, and Charles, being the fantastic guy he is, assured me he would pull out every time. Surprise, surprise,â I said, wrapping my arms around myself as if there was a sudden chill.
Landon faced the stove again. âAnd then his family basically forced you to get married?â
âYes, so our pregnancy out of wedlock wouldnât tarnish the familyâs pristine reputation.â I rolled my eyes. âThey paid for an apartment off campus so we could live together as a âfamilyâ while Charles finished his degree.
