This wordplay is perfect for everyone’s favorite bookish cat lady—and we all have one of those in our lives.

A cat’s claws are before, in the sense of in front of, its paws when the cat is in attack mode and its claws are out, and we’ve all seen cats in attack mode. Less well-known (or at least less well-remembered) is that an independent clause in a sentence is often set off by a comma. A clause is a phrase that has a subject and a predicate where the predicate is or has a verb (“The cat [ß subject / predicate à] is happy” “My hand [ß subject / predicate à] is shredded”) and is part of a sentence that has multiple clauses. An independent clause is one that can exist on its own as a complete sentence. When you have two independent clauses that are linked to form one complete idea, you separate the two by a comma. And a comma indicates a short pause. (“The cat is happy, and my hand is shredded.”)
