sure all around. Geoffrey took the larger car, safely strapping Lizzie into her seat in back, stowing her stroller in the trunk. After a leisurely drive into the city they parked, then meandered along Pier 39 munching on chocolate chip cookies while admiring shops, street entertainers, even their fellow meanderers. For a mid-November day, the air off the bay was particularly chilly. Sara was glad she’d thought to put the baby in her snowsuit rather than the shorter parka Caryn had left out. Her own hands were cold, much as she tried to warm them in her pockets. When Geoffrey released the stroller handle long enough to snag the hand closest to him and tuck it into his larger pocket, she was grateful. The small gesture warmed her in more ways than one.

They were a family: father, mother, child. Sara couldn’t help but stare at their reflection each time they passed a window. It seemed simultaneously real and unreal, so hard to believe yet nearly a fact. Geoffrey pushed the stroller; she kept easy pace close by his side. Lizzie was satisfied to be entertained by the sights around her, looking back only occasionally to assure herself of a familiar face.

“She adores you, Jeff,” Sara commented on impulse after one such endearing twist. “I 158

think you’ve made the right decision to go ahead with the adoption.”

“I know I have,” he replied quietly. They walked further before Sara ventured to break the companionable silence once more.

“What do you think goes on in that little mind of hers? Do you think she ever expects to see Alex when she looks back at you that way?”

Geoffrey shrugged. “We’ll never know for sure. In time she’ll forget, although I don’t totally want that either. When she’s old enough to understand, I want her to know everything possible about Alex and Diane. I may be against her being raised by either of their families, but I certainly want her to come to know them. I don’t think they’ll argue with that.”

“They’ve been in touch with you, haven’t they?”

“Oh, yes.” He sighed suggestively.

“Trouble?”

“I’m not sure. They were hesitant when I told them I intended to adopt her.”

“Hesitant? You mean negative?”

“They felt that my simply being designated Lizzie’s legal guardian would have the same end result.” A like thought had crossed Sara’s mind, only to be struck from it for the very rea159

son Geoffrey proceeded to voice. “But I want her to have the best of everything. I want her to have parents. Not to mention the fact that I want her.”

It was the last thought, tacked on in a lower, more moving tone, that gave Sara pause. It was obvious he did want a child, and that he was eager to devote himself to one. This lovely Sunday afternoon outing seemed to please him as much as it did her. Still, it puzzled her that if he’d wanted a child that badly, he’d not remarried and had one. But then, she reasoned, he now had the best of both worlds.
