The Game

By Nolan Cromwell

The interesting thing about the game of my life is I don’t even remember it. It was probably the best quarter and a half of football I ever played when we lost to the Buccaneers, 10-9.

I intercepted a pass on a deep route, where I just went up and got it. When I was running it back a running back’s foot hit me in the helmet and knocked me out halfway through the first quarter. I went to make a cut and someone dove from behind me and I tripped and was going down, [when] the running back comes flying in with a hit. It was a clean hit. No big deal.

After I got up, I didn’t even remember anything that went on until just before halftime.

It happened about six, seven minutes into the first quarter and then the rest of first quarter and most [of] the second quarter. I remember nothing until there are three seconds to go in the half when they line up for a field goal.

For the next quarter and [a] half, it was probably the best football that I had ever played. I watched the film and I was turning up on every play. I was covering the tight end. I was covering the deep middle.

Bud Carson was our defensive coordinator and he ended up going berserk on the sideline. We were not getting the checks in, which was my responsibility. I come off the field and [Carson] is hollering at me and I don’t remember any of this until I see it on film.

I made a lot of the checks in our defense, based on Tampa Bay’s formation, based on different things. There were certain Tampa Bay formations where we were supposed to check with everyone [on] what was going to happen. But I wasn’t making checks so we just kept going. So no one was really playing what was called and it didn’t matter. But we had a lot flexibility in our defense at the time so we were able to play.

But I don’t know how I was playing. And I was telling everyone what I was going to do before every play. Some of the guys said, “He is out of it.” But it was a great quarter and a half of football.

It was crazy that I was doing so well. You look at that film of me making the tackles and they were excellent tackles. I was squared up on people; my technique was pretty good.

Even the rest of the defensive backs were saying how good I was playing. They said, “You never tackle like that!” Everything was picture perfect.

The secondary was saying, “Don’t worry about it. Keep playing that way.”

It was at halftime that I finally came to after I didn’t remember anything that went on.

But I was knocking people down, making tackles at the line of scrimmage. I was making plays that I wouldn’t normally make, as I was just reading and reacting.

In the second half I could remember things at some point and I played the rest of the game.
