CHAPTER 21

After the bloodbath that had resulted in the deaths of both their doctors, the rebels weren’t about to make the same mistake twice.

Iagorth had played his hand, exposing some of his moieties and revealing the likelihood that more secret copies of himself remained among the Guardians. With that in mind, Caleb had worked with General Haas and Duke Draco to gather every member of the resistance into a single, enormous cavern within the mining complex and had put them under guard by members of Caleb's crew. Even Sasha stood along the cavern’s perimeter, hefting a plasma rifle while Draco's personal physician, Doctor Ambrose Burne, helped a trio of the Draconian flagship’s medical personnel administer blood tests.

It had taken almost two entire days to repair the damaged testing machine and get the entire process back underway. Caleb had barely had a moment to close his eyes during that time, his hours jam packed with needed organizational tasks. Losing two days on Rakusha meant making up time somewhere else, but it was necessary to ensure that the handoff of Lo'ane to Haas went as smoothly as possible. If everything went well, he would never step foot on the Specter again, instead returning to Gorgon to begin his quest to find Lo'ane's successor.

Ham had decided to stay with the rebels for the time being, since they needed him more than Caleb did. Jack wouldn't be coming with him, either. As Caleb had hoped, when given the choice, the kid had remained on board the Specter to lend his khoron-infused abilities to the rebels. Already, Haas had picked up potential targets from Klim's network of child spies, who had gathered the intel in brothels, bars, and on the streets across the Draconian territories. They'd also confirmed fifteen Specters of the twenty that were at Caprum were on the way to Rakusha and that they had three days to clear out before the enemy arrived.

The only wrinkle was that the rebels had nowhere safe to go. Draco's continued loyalty to the Empire and their success on Rakusha hadn't only made the duke a pariah, Crux sent ships to Duke Clayborne's territories as well, preemptively removing him from power before he too could turn against the Legion. From what Caleb had heard, the duke had barely escaped with his life, half his fleet destroyed in the effort. The only silver lining was that it was practically a given that Clayborne would join the resistance now. He hadn't refused to bend a knee to Crux just to drift aimlessly across the Spiral until he died.

Haas had ultimately decided to take Lo'ane to the sector of space where Caleb had stashed the two cargo haulers. There they would unload the members of their retinue who weren't combat qualified, while uploading the military supplies and equipment Caleb had left for them. From there, they would attack Crux's assets, similar to how Caleb had used Gorgon to harass and steal. The Guardians needed to be daring enough to gain
