Chapter Seventeen

THE FIRST FLYNN, Biscuits and McDuff knew about their arrival at the shuttle’s destination was when the landing gear doors began to open, which gave them the shock of their lives. Prior to that they’d either been asleep or in standby mode. Having the floor enclosing the shuttle’s landing gear fall away from them leaving nothing for them to stand on but the cold vacuum of space was certainly one way to wake up, but hardly one they’d have chosen.

Fortunately for all three of them, they were so entangled around the landing gear that they didn’t fall straight out, but as the leg sections themselves began to unfold, they had to cling on for dear life as the shuttle drifted down onto some sort of landing area. They’d no idea where the landing area was, or even if it was inside or outside. All they could see of it from where they were was the floor. As that was a smooth highly-polished black material, they assumed it was probably inside something like a hangar. Furthermore, the air proved to be both warm and breathable, which it certainly wasn’t when the landing gear doors had first opened.

Once the shuttle landed, they remained there for a few moments, motionless, as they listened to the shuttle’s ramp being lowered behind them. Once it was in place, they hung upside down like a family of bats so that they could have a look around and see in which direction the aliens were going to take Stella.

After watching her being carried away, draped over the shoulder of one of the purple-headed aliens who were both still wearing blue jeans and stripy green rugby shirts, they made a mental note of the doorway and pulled their heads back inside the fuselage. They stared at each other, through the tangled forest of pipes and wires that separated them, until Biscuits asked, ‘So, what are we going to do now?’

‘Simple,’ replied Flynn. ‘We find where they’ve taken Stella and then rescue her!’

‘And that’s simple, is it?’ questioned Biscuits, not sounding as if he was even close to being convinced.

‘OK, simple probably wasn’t the right word, but we’re going to have to try. I for one am not prepared to just leave her here.’

Biscuits didn’t want to leave her there either, but he was equally keen not to be captured himself, and wandering around what was either an alien planet or some giant-sized hostile spaceship asking if anyone had seen a human female who was about five foot six inches tall, had beige skin, caramel blonde hair that was tied back in a ponytail, was incredibly pretty and had the body of a pole-dancing stripper, was probably an excellent way to do so.

Sensing his reluctance to leave the relative safety of his shuttle craft’s undercarriage housing, Flynn added, ‘Look, we’ve come this far, and besides, we don’t even know where this is! If nothing else, we’re going to have to work out how to get back to Makemake, so we may as well try to find out where they’ve taken Stella at the same time.
