âShe gets lonely,â Drina said, digging through a parts bin. âI canât blame her, but it can still irritate the hell out of me. Iâm allowed to have feelings.â
I sat on a stool at one of the engineerâs workbenches. Iâd been watching her work for the last hour, waiting for Keldon to reappear.
âSure,â I agreed.
âIâm trying to run a shop here. Weâve got an image to maintain. Sometimes we have to use violence. I canât have the rank and file see the boss getting all giddy when an old flame like Keldon shows up. Itâs bad for business.â
âIâm starting to think he didnât just show up,â I said. âSeemed like Jack was in a better mood the minute we learned the minishuttle had a connection to Rolo.â
Drina shook her head. âThis has happened before. Those two are like oil and water. They seem fine to start, but then it gets too hot and the oil smokes, the water evaporates, things get sticky, and before you know it everything is on fire.â
âWhen was he here last?â I asked.
âA year ago? I donât keep track. I think he arrested her some ten years ago. Itâs been on and off since then.â
âThatâs awkward,â I said.
One of Drinaâs workers appeared in the doorway with Carthageâs dead handgun in one hand. âHey, Boss,â he said. âDid you want this thing?â
âThatâs mine,â I said.
The worker tossed it to me. âThen clean up your crap.â
I caught the pistol and turned it in my hands. The firing mechanism was scorched and the battery no longer showed charge. A long burn ran from under the barrel to the back of the power control.
A dark realization set over me. Carthage had set me up. If I had been carrying the handgun in Ronnyâs apartment, Iâd be dead. So doing the right thing had actually saved my ass. Now I had to figure out how that fit into the bigger picture.
âWhat are you grinning about?â Drina asked.
âLuck. You want this thing?â
She shrugged. âThrow it in that bin over there. It might have some use someday.â
I tossed the pistol. âWhat can you tell me about this gang?â
âYou donât want to mess with them. Thatâs what I know.â
âI already did.â
âIf thatâs true and youâre alive, you should count your blessings.â
âHow many of them are there?â
âMaybe a thousand. They run an old ice processing facility on the far side of the Chop.â
I sat up straighter. âIs that where the mini called home to?â
Drina made a sour face, realizing sheâd given up the info she refused to share earlier. âYes, I think so. I havenât seen any activity though. Weâve got a feed from a sensor over there. Things are still quiet. Or normal, at least.â
âWhat kind of work do they do?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âAre they mercenaries? Do they do work for hire?â
âWhat do you think they do? You offer enough cash, theyâll watch your dog and babysit your kids. Or knock off a Union transport in open space and murder the whole crew. Theyâre crazy.
