Noah had wandered back to his computer. Cato stood behind Evangeline watching her write a letter to her alternative self. Her handwriting was rather old-fashioned, a sort of informal copperplate. The pen moved steadily across the page leaving a trail of decorative black ink.

Dear Evangeline/Me,

I’m writing to you/me from a timeline that will be replaced by the one you are in when you read this. Cato Quinn will give you this letter. He is from the past, and has a time machine.

“Put in that I’m on your side and you can trust me.”

Obediently, Evangeline wrote: – He is on our side and you can trust him. In the original timeline, Lucas gets the data but is shot during the raid and dies. Cato is going to take a doctor forward in time – that’s back in my time – to save him.

Liam Roth whom you have not yet met does the second raid on the GU Cyber Security Center. We paid him five hundred million dollars . . .

When Cato mentioned the six hundred million Sword of the People had paid Roth, Evangeline had argued that they shouldn’t have had to pay him anything for Lucas’s drive in the first place since it hadn’t been Roth’s to sell. Cato had shrugged and accepted the lower figure. He supposed it didn’t matter; Roth wouldn’t know how much he’d got the first time.

. . . because Cato feels bad about him losing out in the altered timeline, and makes it a condition of saving Lucas that he still gets paid. So, although Liam Roth is rather obnoxious and unscrupulous and definitely not to be trusted –

Cato laughed when she underlined the last five words with a firm stroke of her pen.

“Well, it’s true.” She went on writing: – in order to save Lucas you must persuade the others to contribute and pay him, making it look as if you are investing in the online business he is about to set up. Also, Cato must go with Lucas on the second raid, as he knows how to do it because he’s already done it. I hope this isn’t confusing – I’m trying to be clear.

She looked up. “Have I missed anything?”

“Looks good to me. If there’s a problem I can always come back – that’s the beauty of having a time machine.”

She signed her name, folded the letter, put it in an envelope and handed it to Cato.
