CHAPTER FORTY-ONE
Stephanie pushed open the door and walked inside. She saw the teller counters to her left and the banking assistants to the right. She went to the sign-in sheet for the banking assistants and added her name. There was no way she’d be pulling two-hundred-thousand dollars in cash out of her backpack at the teller counter. She filled out a deposit slip, had a seat and waited for her name to be called.
Stephanie had done business with this particular bank since she was old enough to be on her own. She’d set up her account prior to 2009, so if she calculated things correctly, this should be a simple matter of making a deposit into an account she already had. If she did so today, then in theory, the money would be in her account when she got back. That wouldn’t be the case though, because she’d be spending it later in the day.
She waited patiently while a couple of people were helped. When her name was called, she walked over to the middle-aged female associate and explained that she wanted to make a deposit, but because it was a large cash deposit, she’d like to do it away from the general public. She was led to an office off to the side of the bank. The loud click of the door latching behind her made her jump slightly.
“Hi, I’m Judy. How can I help you today, Ms …?”
“Duran.” Stephanie handed her the deposit slip. “I’d like to make a cash deposit.”
Judy looked at the slip and Stephanie noticed her eyebrows raise slightly.
“Is this all cash?”
“Yes. I felt uncomfortable being at a teller window with this kind of money. I’ve been saving it for years.”
“I’d be happy to help. Do you have your bank card handy?”
“I didn’t bring it with me,” Stephanie lied. The lie had too easily escaped her lips.
“No worries. How about your ID?”
Stephanie felt that familiar panic rise up inside her, but she was committed now. She pulled her wallet out of the side pocket of the back pack and slid her license out of the wallet. She wondered if her luck would hold out. She handed the identification to Judy who glanced at it for a second, before a sharp rap pulled her attention towards the door. Before Judy could answer, a younger male employee walked into the room.
“Judy, they need you at window four. I’m so sorry to interrupt.”
Judy nodded. “Can you make this deposit for Ms. Duran?” She handed the deposit slip and the license to the newcomer.
“I’d be happy to.” The guy, whom she assumed was Gary based upon his name tag, took the deposit slip and handed the driver’s license back to Stephanie. “Do you have the cash?”
Stephanie unzipped her backpack and pulled out the pillowcase, handing it to him. Gary opened up the bag and pulled out the stacks of hundreds. As he did, he stacked them up and counted to twenty.
“Twenty stacks at ten thousand each is two-hundred-thousand. Let me go verify the stacks through the machine and I’ll bring you a receipt.
