“I’m here to meet Mr Ruskin,” a man mumbled shakily into Elspeth’s earpiece.

He sounded nervous, which shouldn’t have been surprising. Ruskin was terrifying after all, but this was a whole new level of scared. Elspeth could practically hear his knees knocking.

“Back in a minute,” she said, rising to her feet.

“Left jacket pocket,” Silver advised.

Elspeth turned towards the French windows and weaved her way through the palms and circular tables of the exclusive conservatory restaurant as the rain pummelled down onto the glass roof above.

Anyone would’ve been a better choice to drop the listening device disguised as a business card into Bellamy’s pocket. Shanti would have been the best choice since she was the fastest, but she hadn’t wanted to draw attention to herself since Ruskin had arrived with his right-hand man.

She sat with her back to their table now, luckily wearing one of her fancy wigs. Silver was unrecognisable—a thousand minute features away from the round-faced girl she’d presented herself as the night she won the skate-off. But Silver hadn’t drawn the short straw.

Elspeth had.

Luckily, she’d decided to wear a dark wig too, because she had no doubt that David Ross would have recognised her had she arrived with her coppery blonde hair.

Elspeth crashed into the unassuming, dark-haired man being led to Ruskin’s table, slipping the card into his pocket. “I’m sorry,” she whispered, her face flaring an undoubtedly dramatic shade of red.

The man immediately apologised. “Are you alright? I was distracted… I don’t know how I didn’t see you because… Well, look at you. Hard to miss. Oh goodness, I’m sorry. I’m babbling.”

The hostess leading him smirked. “Are you ready to get to your table, sir?”

“Oh goodness, yes. If… if you’re sure you’re alright?” He glanced at Elspeth again with wide blue eyes.

He was taller than her, a novel experience in its own right. She’d worn flat pumps for a change. A genuine smile tugged at her lips. “I’m fine. And it was entirely my fault, so don’t worry.”

Why was she talking like the bloody queen? She patted his arm, and headed for the ladies, retrieving the device they’d left at the hostess stand earlier on her way. She reapplied the red lipstick Danica bought for her in front of the ornate mirror, smacking her lips together before heading back into the restaurant.

She smiled as the conversation at her table drifted into her earpiece.

“Only one of us is not happily married,” she heard Silver say.

“Oh, really? Which one?”

Even from twenty feet away and able to see only the back of the chancer’s blonde head, Elspeth could imagine the smarmy look on his face. She could certainly hear it in his voice.

“She’s not here yet,” Silver told him.

From behind him, Elspeth said, “That’s my seat, pal.”

The man turned, eyes settling on her chin before rising to meet hers. He gulped, then let out a small whimper of a laugh. “Enjoy your lunch, ladies.”

He hurried away like one of the lobsters had crawled off a plate to pinch his arse.
