Maggie told him about her earlier blow-up with Jack. Listening to her and watching her hands move as she talked was tons better than Facetiming would have been. âEver since he promoted me, heâs been hands-off, which has been great, but this week heâs acted like he didnât even care about Brewsterâs. Something feels off.â She shrugged.
âHave you thought any more about buying that business?â
âYes, especially when Jackâs around. Iâll keep plugging away at saving for it. I hoped you enjoyed that sundae because thatâs the last splurge Iâll have for a longtime.â
âI can pick up the tab for both of us, butââhe leaned forward and turned his head as if making sure no one would overhearââI may have a solution.â
âIf it involves donating more plasma, Iâm already at the limit, but I could spare a kidney. Or is it a liver?â
âItâs a kidney and you donât need to donate anything other than your eternal gratitude to me.â
âSure, whatâs your solution?â she asked, but from the look on her face, he didnât think heâd be getting eternal thanks.
âWhy donât you ask your parents or Five for a loan? Iâm sure theyâd love to help you.â Maggieâs face screwed up, and she leaned back, studying him. Lucas forced himself not to squirm under her scrutiny. His idea was great, and he didnât know what Ms. Independentâs problem was. Well, other than asking for help. âCome on, admit it. Itâs a great idea. The only reason you donât like it is because you didnât think of it,â he taunted.
âI have thought of it.â Her admission caught him off-guard.
âBut?â
âBut I donât have a great track record of being a success.â She pulled one of his napkins toward her and pleated it. Nervous tell? he wondered, remembering the other times sheâd done it.
âSays who?â
âNo one says it, but my siblings have all eclipsed me. Harperâs a successful journalistââ
âWhoâs smearing her brotherâs employer across the front page every chance she gets?â
âPenny runs a successful bookstoreââ
âCo-manages with her aunt whoâs owned the store for years,â he reminded her.
âAnd owns a car.â
âYou could, too, but youâre saving for something big, which is something successful people do.â
âAnd Fiveâs a professional football player.â
âWell, that is the pinnacle of perfection. You can never compete with that.â Maggie crumpled up the paper napkin and tossed it at him, laughing when it bounced off his forehead.
âSome football player you are. You should have caught that.â
âI didnât try,â he said as he smoothed out the napkin. âTry, Maggie. You wonât know unless you ask.â
