So, to a large extent, stress is the body’s way of adapting to life-threatening situations like when you are on a camping trip and see a brown bear in your tent licking its chops. The problem is that too many of us are in a constant state of “brown bearness.” This is to say that once upon a time there was always resolution to our stress. You either got away or got eaten.

Today, our bodies still react with these same, archaic fight or flight responses that are now, not only unuseful, but potentially damaging and deadly. Repeatedly invoked, it is not hard to see how they can contribute to hypertension, strokes, heart attacks, diabetes, ulcers, neck, or low back pain and other diseases (American Institute of Stress, 2007). Many of these effects are due to increased sympathetic nervous system activity and an outpouring of adrenaline, cortisol, and other stress-related hormones. Put it all together and you can have physical symptoms of seeing that brown bear long after he has left your tent.

Accepting Stress

We love the classic example the Buddha once spoke of when he reached his enlightenment under the bodhi tree. As a sailboat went drifting by he noticed that if the sail was not pulled tight enough, it would not sail. If the sail was pulled too tight, it would break from the pressure and stress of the wind. This classic metaphor is a great symbol for how stress should be used in our lives—as a way to help balance—not to break. It should help us be more productive, not destructive, so we can more easily “sail” through life.

Whether you are just starting to “try” or have been working on conception for years, the process of getting pregnant can be stressful, even life-altering. We place ourselves under a microscope and, perhaps for the first time, begin to evaluate every aspect of our life from what we put into our bodies to how we handle disappointment. We also begin to question how we can bring another responsibility, another life into this world and still hold everything all together when we are already so stressed out ourselves.

Symptoms of Depression

The following are the symptoms listed by the National Mental Health Association:

Little interest or pleasure in doing things

Feeling down, depressed, or hopeless

Trouble falling or staying asleep or sleeping too much

Feeling tired or having little energy

Poor appetite or overeating

Feeling bad about yourself—or that you are a failure or have let yourself or your family down

Trouble concentrating on things, such as reading the newspaper or watching television

Moving or speaking so slowly that other people have noticed. Or the opposite—being so fidgety or restless that you have been moving around more than usual

Thoughts that you would be better off dead, or of hurting yourself in some way.
