Tapper and Howe stayed back with Steven. Steven went aboard and looked around.
âItâs quite a ship, isnât it?â They both agreed. âWas this thing any use?â
Howe looked to Tapper. âThere was a guy there who knew his mining stuff, he could hardly take his eyes off it. I think it served its purpose.â
âHow did it go?â
âI would say masterfully.â He turned to Howe. âWhat say you old boy?â
âCharlie was like a marionette. He had them all dancing. I think he also won a new admirer.â
âTapper laughed, âI think she pranced all the way back to their ship.â
âNow you have to tell me everything.â
They filled Steven in on exactly what happened.
âIt sounds like they bought it.â
Howe nodded, âI think so. You should try and relax a little. Youâre wound up tighter than a drum.â
âI am finding it very hard to do so.â
Tapper grasped him by the shoulder, âThen we need to get you drunk old boy.â
âI donât think I can risk getting drunk.â
âBabes can sober you up if she requires you. We have had a nice dinner. We can keep watch for a couple of days while you let loose.â
âMaybe. How did you get rid of that dangerous stuff?â
âSold it to another dealer for a hundred grand local currency.â
âSeriously?â
âThat was a third of the going price. The chap almost snapped our arms off for it. Where did you get it?â
âOld abandoned mines, on the other side of the planet.â
Tapper thought it over for a moment. âThat might explain a lot. At that price it might well have been worth the expense to terraform this planet. Of course, that is just todayâs market prices. Who knows what it was when they first began to develop this world. Good job sir, good find.â
Steven gave his scalp a scratch, âIt is such a pity we will never get the opportunity to spend it all.â
âYou might want to look at it another way. When we first joined the Federation we had a hellava job getting a bank account, now we have near a dozen.â
âIâm not coming back here.â
âI wasnât talking about us. I have a feeling we will be hearing more from this grand Empire. If our forces move into this area, we may well need those resources. I for one would like to return.â
Steven was surprised, âI didnât see that one coming.â
Tapper shook his head, âI like it here, the people I find easier to deal with. In the Federation we always get people running away from us. Bad karma because we are meat eaters. Here no one gives a hoot.â
Steven sighed, âMaybe youâre right. You wonât be coming back on this ship though. We might make it through the blockade, but I doubt that she will.â
Howe looked around, âDid you complete the fuel cells?â
âWe did, and a bomb just in case.â
âA Komoru special?â
âThere will be nothing left of the ship but dust.â
âI hope it doesnât come to that.â Howe sighed.
âYou all seem to have become very fond of the ship.â
Howe thought it over, âIt isnât just the ship, it was the way of life as well.
