Ganymede Station

The journey from Earth went so smoothly Aly found herself slightly bored. It wasn’t that she wanted to repeat the drama of the last year, but there was something odd when there was so little crisis on the Argo. As captain and owner of the ship, they should have been the times to celebrate, but Aly couldn’t help but struggle.

“Are you okay?”

She gazed beyond the fluffy pink beverage in front of her to her father’s loving but concerned eyes. “I dunno, I guess I’m just thinking too much.”

“Who taught you to do that?”

Aly laughed. “Whoever did, I should have a word with them.”

“You’re thinking about Jason, aren’t you?”

She peered around the tavern they’d stumbled into. In the center was a circular bar. On one side were tables and chairs where patrons sat having quiet conversations between themselves, while on the other was a hypnotic cacophony of color and noise on a dance floor full of young people, who all seemed to have no cares in the world.

“Yeah, and Tyler.” Aly frowned. “Things have changed so much.”

Her father sipped at his beer. “I guess it doesn’t make it easy sharing a ship with a pair of old codgers either.”

He must’ve caught her looking across at the youngsters. “That’s not it at all,” she said.

“Alyssa, I get it. I was young once, too. It might have been during the Jurassic period, but I still remember.” He glanced over his shoulder at the youthful revelers. “Why don’t you go over there?”

“Because even I’m too old for that crowd.”

“Ridiculous.”

“I’m not a little girl anymore.”

“You’ll always be my little girl.”

“That may be so, but unlike these kids, I’ve got a lot of responsibilities now.” She stood. “Which includes checking over the engines before we return to Earth.”

“If you won’t go over there,” he said, “perhaps I should.”

Aly giggled and kissed him on the head. “Be home before midnight, and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.” She passed by the dancers and exited, making her way to Ganymede Station’s hangar deck. Just as she’d left her, the Argo sat snuggly between a pair of small ore haulers.

Aly pressed on her commband, and the rear entry ramp extended. She climbed up it and activated the cargo bay’s internal lighting with a mash of the panel beside the door. The hollow expanse would be once again full the next day with modules of lab samples for their return to Earth.

She took the elevator to A Deck and entered the engine room. It was messier than usual with all the other duties she had to perform. Something she’d have to rectify.

While she cleaned up the heap of tools on the maintenance console, her ears pricked up to a distant clatter. She stepped toward the hatchway and peered down the corridor.

But there was nothing there.

Then the rattle sounded again.

“Althaus?” she called out, knowing very well he wasn’t one to be a prankster, especially in the mood he’d been in since leaving Earth. Not to mention the fact he said he was going to the station for some alone time.
