❶ ★★ Museo Diocesano. Cortona’s small yet outstanding collection of sacred art reflects the town’s former glory and its position at the crossroads of influences from Florence, Siena, and the neighboring region of Umbria. Native son Luca Signorelli is the predictable star, in particular his monumental 1502 Lamentation, complete with surreal background scenes including the Crucifixion and Resurrection. Elsewhere in this deconsecrated church turned museum, Fra’ Angelico’s gentle Annunciation (1436) over the former baptismal font reveals him in top form, on his favorite subject. The narrative scenes from the Life of the Virgin on the predella are especially charming. Also represented are Sienese master Pietro Lorenzetti (1280–1348) and Florentine Bartolomeo della Gatta (1448–1502), and a fine Greco-Roman sarcophagus from the 2nd century even pops up. N 1 hr. Piazza del Duomo. ☎ 0575-4027268. Admission 5€. Daily 10am–7pm (closed Mon Nov–Mar).
