Recipe for unpicking an assignment brief

Pick out the command words. Are you being asked to ‘critically analyse’, ‘evaluate’, ‘contrast’…? You might find it helpful to highlight, underline or circle these terms to help pay attention to what you’re being asked to do. Don’t worry if you are not quite clear at this point in terms of what these command words mean – we have a recipe for that and will cover this all-important step shortly!

Identify the topic. Consider what content and concepts the question relates to. Do you feel you have a good grasp of this content or might you need to revisit some of the material or do some additional reading (if possible)?

Additional sources of information. Does the question indicate whether there are any other additional sources of information or data you need to include or make reference to in your assignment? This might include a key reading, some data, statistics, practical work…

The taste-test. We think of this final stage of our recipe as a ‘taste-test’. It is a useful way of reviewing what you have planned and written for the assignment and can help you to make sure that you have included all the key ingredients listed above in order to answer the question. Whilst creating your assignment or answering the question you have been set, keep checking what you are writing so that you get the mix right; the combination of responding to the command words and drawing on the most appropriate content and resources will lead you towards success.
