Chapter 10

The Table Of Six

The darkened concrete hallways with their blood-stained graffiti, rusted steam pipes, and distinct fragrance of flower and alcohol gave way to the inner chamber of the Grand Ballroom. Headed by the six distinct Vampiri Governors overseeing the different clans, they kept mostly to themselves, rarely making an appearance topside, unless warranted. Wise and old compared to other genetic Vampiri, they sat semi-quiet at the elaborately crafted Lovecraftian dinner table. The ballroom was adorned from wall to wall with different colored tapestries, mostly gold-outlined Vampiri crests, and ancient extinct religious sects.

The night-black carpet flowed like silk to the four corners of the stone Cathedral columns that gave shape and essence to this place. Reddish metal pylons with a ten-foot diameter created a square around the room, with thirty small plaster and stone statues of various deities and ancient artifacts lining the walls. A large representation of “The Green”, the Vampiri name for Planet Earth, cast a powerful presence in the center of the ballroom. Golden candle holders, fashioned in the shape of two hands coming together, lit up the entire underground sanctuary.

“It’s beautiful here. I’ve lost touch with the creative hands that bring forth such a soothing elegance.” The stranger, hood covering his face and cloak flowing behind him as he walked, took in the advanced craftsmanship of a paranormal political table. Adjusting his hood, he continued to speak. “It reminds me of ‘White Castles’ and ‘Blood Red’ ballroom dancing.”

“We’ve been waiting for you to finally make your appearance,” said Mordred, leader of the Table of Six and Vampiri Lord. He looked at his plate of pig's meat with a carrot cocktail. His fingers grasped the wooden fork and took a bite. His eyes fixed themselves directly upon the strange miscreant. The sitting council remained stoic for a moment, then all heads turned in unison toward the visitor, in accordance with Mordred’s direction.

The visitor didn’t flinch. A hidden smile behind the darkness of the hood quickly moved into a subtle, manic, repeating laugh. It was haunting to Mordred. It was concerning the day, a prophecy, now coming to fruition. Mordred was a powerful Vampiri, feared by many different species and respected for his caring of all creatures, both above and below. Considered to be a great diplomat in paranormal genetic and full human relations, the appearance of this man before him made him tremble.

“Your name, I might ask?” No response was forthcoming. The hooded figure remained motionless, with one hand holding a goblet filled with wine resting on a small table beside him. Slowly and silently the stranger took several drinks from the goblet, his face still hidden from view. The Table of Six watched cautiously, mixed with emotional bouts of fear and anxiety. The dull gray goblet was placed back into its previous spot, and the stranger still said nothing.

“Again. Your name, might I ask?” Mordred inquired politely, his voice echoing within the chamber. He went on saying, “We’ve been aware of your presence for several months.
