Chapter 21

Food for Thought

* * *

AFTER MUCH PROTESTING, I finally gathered myself and Nate carried me out of the room. I felt like a child in his good arm, the other rested against his chest in a sling. We emerged into a hallway; pictures lined the colorful wallpaper on our way towards the stairs.

I instantly recognized Nate in one of the frames, an enormous smile plastered on his lips. He looked very dapper in his tuxedo, much different than the combat fatigues he now wore. His eyes were full of love as he looked at the woman in his arms, her features a carbon copy of Aria's. The only difference was instead of dreadlocks, her curly hair flew wildly behind her in the joyful, captured moment.

I cleared my throat. "This is your house, I take it?"

Nate nodded as we began descending the stairs. "Moved here two weeks before the blasts." I could see him clench his jaw as he added, "At the time, it was a blessing."

I winced as he descended from the final step, not from the throbbing pain in my temples, but at recalling the unfortunate fate of Aria's mother.

Nate turned right and a cozy living area opened up before us. A large sofa and recliner sat in the middle of the hardwood floor, facing a gigantic television that rested on an entertainment stand that matched the screen in size. Hundreds of DVDs lined the stand's many shelves, neatly, and no doubt in alphabetical order.

Men.

"Isn't that a bit much?" I inquired, raising my eyebrows at the display.

He walked me towards the sofa, a slight smirk on his face as he simply replied, "Absolutely not."

A moan escaped my lips as my body sank into the cushions. It did nothing for the pain in my head, but the level of comfort I instantly felt was almost orgasmic.

"Did I just get lowered onto a cloud?"

Nate chuckled as he stood. "Hungry?"

I hadn't realized just how much I was until he asked. I nodded furiously as I propped myself up. My back rested against the sofa's armrest as Nate walked towards the kitchen. Like the living room, the adjacent kitchen wasn't overly large. An island with a white countertop sat in the middle, cupboards lined the far wall along with all the appliances you'd find in most homes.

"What's on the menu?" My stomach rumbled in anticipation.

I watched as a cold mist from the open freezer fell over Nate's face. The sight seemed so foreign to me. I couldn't recall the last time I saw an ice cube.

After a few seconds, Nate emerged with several frozen packages. He laid them on the countertop. "How's grilled chicken, potatoes, and corn sound?"

"Heavenly!" I pointed at one of the lit bulbs on the ceiling. “Generators, I'm assuming?"

I was surprised when Nate shook his head. "There is a small power plant just outside of Haven, a mile or two beyond the walls. Don't ask me how that shit works, but we're able to get electricity." He shrugged and added, "Not my field of expertise.
