It is so critical that all students, particularly our strivers, see reading as a meaningful act that will make a real difterence in their lives.

We are particularly elated when a striving reader like Anthony, the fourth grader we met in Chapter 1, realizes that reading is truly about thinking. To help striving readers get that message, we offer interactive, whole-group, community-building instruction to all readers, and, for those who need it, additional support in temporary and flexible needs-based small groups. Above all, we want our striving readers to recognize the power of their own thinking. When striving readers come to understand that reading is thinking and that strategies are tools to aid understanding, confidence grows, reading flourishes, and possibilities open.
