Chapter 23

“She’ll drive me crazy that Tasha!” Liz shouted to Balthazar over the phone.

“Liz, I’m not deaf, but if you continue to shout in my ear like this, I definitely will be.”

“I found her a wonderful, two-bedroom apartment, and what did she do?”

“What?”

“She decided to live with Fabien Blanchard, not giving a damn about the fact that I was practically buried in newspapers all day.”

“I would do the same if I were her; not every girl in town gets such a chance.”

“Exactly. You should have seen her! She came in with Blanchard all glowing and happy while I was killing myself with guilt!”

“You will have plenty of time for an apology. You know what I just thought?”

“Tell me. I’m no prophet.”

“Let her interview Fabien Blanchard, and If it’s good, we’ll put it in the issue.”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea. I doubt she’ll be able to write a single sentence considering her circumstances and all the stress she has been through.”

“Has been through, so I assume it’s over. You should try to convince her. I am more than sure she’s going to be okay. Don’t underestimate her. She was so focused today, so determined to find that dog, interrogating every single person. By the way, she said we are understaffed and that there needs to be more drive. She needs motivation, and she’s not a white-winged angel.”

“Do the white-winged angels exist anymore, Hamish?”

“Not among us anyway. Let her do the interview, and let me go now.”

“Well, it’s not that I adore you either, Hamish.”

“Listen, when you call me by my surname, I always feel like I’m in some bad cop movie. Stop it, would you?”

“You’ll have to change your surname then.”

“No way, I’m quite proud of it.”

“Tell me, what did your parents call you when you were a kid, Balthazar? Just like that? No nickname?”

“No. It’s my grandfather’s name on my dad’s side.”

“A rare name, though, and strange.”

“Why don’t we leave this conversation for another more appropriate time, Liz? It’s a long and boring story.”

“You’re probably right. I’d better sit in silence for a while. Good night.”

“See you tomorrow, Liz. Bye.”

Liz went upstairs to her bed, thinking about Tasha again. Balthazar was right. She’d assign Tasha for an interview and see how it went. Suddenly she heard a beep. It was a message from Antoine.

“Zizith, you forgot about me. I should have said you’re a liar. I’m waiting for a puppy stupidly, no you, no puppy. Just that silly book.”

Another message followed immediately.

“Sorry, the book was okay. I liked it a lot.”

Liz called him back.

“Hey, why aren’t you sleeping?”

“Mom and Dad think I am asleep.”

“And you’re doing what?”

“Playing, you?”

“I’m going to sleep. So, how was The Jungle Book?”

“I liked Bagheera and Baloo and Kaa, the snake. They are awesome. When did you read it, Liz?”

“When I was of your age.”

“Wow.”

“Look, Antoine, I’m sorry for being late with the puppy, but you will have it, I promise, very soon. He’s on his way. Be patient, okay?”

“I’ll try, but it’s hard. Mom always says I’m impatient.
