BALAYAGE COLOR

"Do not dye your hair!” stresses De Maigret. “Or if you do, only in your original color to highlight it or to hide any gray." One of the greatest trends to emerge from Parisian hair salons over the last few years has been the balayage method. Favored by everyone from Jessica Alba to Kate Middleton, the coloring technique has been around since the 1970s but due to its time-consuming application, it never really caught on to the mainstream.

Cut to the present day and nearly every salon is clamoring to brush up on the sought-after technique. Literally meaning to sweep or scan, balayage differs from typical salon color in that it is applied by painting the hair strands instead of foil strips.

Remember too that, as with any artificial color added to the hair, the chemical processing can damage the fragile strands. Take special care to nourish and treat your hair regularly with oils and masques. "My own trick is to protect it with some borage oil,” says Julia Restoin Roitfeld, the daughter of iconic Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfeld. “It’s the best nourishing oil. I also take borage as pills in the morning and put some on my skin after being exposed under the sun."
