After the war, Bonnard spent time in the United States, though his travels had little influence on his work, nor did the war. His concentration on the same subjects, in particular the body of Marthe, impressed critics who were exasperated by the tendency of artists to embrace the latest vogue. By contrast with them, Bonnard’s canvases seemed “meditative masterpieces.” After Marthe died in 1942, much of the spirit went out of Bonnard’s life. He had lost his most absorbing subject.

Only at Le Bosquet did Bonnard feel completely at home. Over the years, he opened up the interior of the house, removing walls and shifting furniture until it became a world of its own within which he found numerous subjects to paint. Such works as Corner of the Dining Room at Le Cannet (1932), The White Interior (1932), The Dessert (1940) and The French Window (1932) celebrate the house and the objects within it. In particular he painted Marthe, often nude and either entering or emerging from the bath.

Bonnard’s work absorbed him utterly. To him, the distinction between life and painting did not exist. As one critic wrote, “In the end, may it not be said that Bonnard lived at a remove from the world, sacrificing all to his passion for art?”
