GREAT PEOPLE ARE HUMBLE

WE WOULD BE able to avoid anger, just like Sariputta, if only we could let go of senseless pride.

One time, the tiniest section of Sariputta’s robe was hanging down out of place. A young novice of the order noticed and said to him, “Excuse me, but look at your robe.” At which Sariputta immediately bowed down and said, “Oh, thank you very much for telling me.” This novice was just a boy, practicing under the tutelage of noble Sariputta, and Sariputta was the Buddha’s own right hand, but he had no sense of ego about this; when the acolyte told him of his error, all he felt was gratitude.

We may not be able to emulate this perfectly, but I think it’s a wonderful lesson to keep in mind. Becoming angry due to an egoistic sense of “But I’m the boss” or “Because I’m right” is only a very ugly form of selfishness. Please remember that. This is why humility is so important. To Buddhists, Buddha was the greatest person ever to have lived, and Sariputta was a close second. But when someone told this great man that his hem was out of place, he simply thanked him. And so it should be.
