Writing Your Story

It’s tempting to read the stories in this book or hear how other people work through their pain and believe that you are benefiting. However, I have learned that thinking through an emotional challenge is not as healing as taking the time to put your thoughts and feelings into writing. It is as if by getting the words onto paper, the emotionally painful experience loses its grip on your heart.

Please take the time now to focus on each of your painful experiences from the past and write your own responses to the six questions:

1) What happened to me that caused the pain?

2) What was the context of this painful chapter in my life?

3) What feelings were generated?

4) What need was not met or what boundary was crossed that caused me pain?

5) What were the clues that I overlooked?

6) How was I served by denying the clues?

Write until you have nothing left to say about each experience. If you sense that there is more to reveal but have difficulty accessing the information, do another round of heart-opening yoga poses and breathing exercises. Sometimes going for a walk while staying in a state of intuitive self-reflection can bring hidden memories to the surface. Writing with your nondominant hand can also reveal surprising insights, which come from tapping into different parts of your brain that can access memories you buried long ago. If you stay with this process, you will reach a state of clarity. Keep going until you get there. As you bring your painful stories into the light of awareness, the pain, resentment, and regret that have kept you in bondage begin to loosen their grip, moving you another step closer to the freedom of self-love and acceptance.

This completes the identification step. Through your diligent work, you have now brought into your awareness the toxic beliefs and painful experiences that have limited your capacity for happiness and health. In the act of identification, you have already begun to mobilize emotional ama from your body, heart, and mind.

In the next chapter you will complete the mobilization process and proceed to the fourth step of release. Even though this process is challenging, I encourage you to stay with it. You are getting closer to healing your emotions and healing your body.
