I dream about fire. It’s a familiar nightmare, one that I’ve had a lot more since I’ve been together with Brill, spending all those nights with our toes in the sand talking about being heroes. In the dream, I’m usually standing behind a transparent barrier watching my father throw that little girl down to safety. He turns, and looks at me, and his eyes melt from their sockets, replaced by flames as he burns from the inside out. I bang on the barrier, trying to get him to let me lead him out of there, but he won’t look, just melts like he’s made of wax. This time in the dream, the barrier evaporates. I’m with him in that fuego, and when his eyes start to burn, he wraps his arms around my waist and the fire jumps from him to me, and I’m the one turning to wax.

I wake with a soft cry. I’m lying on an oversized exam table. The same Zantite who had thrown Orlux Chlaf’s body in on top of me now wears a benign smile as he injects something into my leg, and suddenly I feel a lot less feverish. His eyes are sapphire toned. All the other Zantite eyes I’ve seen range from black to warm brown. Given the color of their blood and his thinner form, I wonder if he’s something like an albino, despite his vibrant yellow skin. Claro está, for all I know, he could just be from a different part of Zant.

“I’m Waylux Tassiks, but everybody just calls me Doc.”

I look over at the wall, at shelves stacked with bottles and pills and instruments. On the bottom one, a cube of something like permaplaque surrounds a heart, más grande than a human’s, but not so different anatomically. A shiny pair of boots sits on the floor below. I feel queasy, have to look away.

Doc moves his hands up to check my lymph nodes. “I’ve done what I can to slow the venom’s destructive power, but I cannot stop it. I am thoroughly sorry for your loss.”

His fingers feel muy, muy cold.
