“We’re almost there. Do you have a plan?”

Fraser’s quiet words beside her jolted Pippa out of the conversation she’d been replaying in her head. The one where Jonas asked her, of all people, how his brother was doing.

From her vantage point, pretty bloody well. He still sported that dark beard, the one with tiny flecks of red, and he’d changed into a clean shirt, a pair of jeans, and bore a look that told her that today, they’d find Imani.

And Creed.

So yeah, he seemed pretty put together, and she said as much to Jonas as Fraser stepped out of the sliding door, walked across the patio, and then onto the street to get the car, which they’d ended up parking a few blocks away.

“Hmm,” Jonas said.

“Why?” She probably hadn’t needed to ask that. She didn’t have time, really, but the way Jonas looked at his brother, then turned back to her, what looked like concern in his expression had her pausing. Asking.

He drew in a breath.

“He told me about Nigeria, if that’s what you’re worried about.” Maybe she wouldn’t mention the nightmares, though. Seemed like if he wanted his brother to know, he would have told him.

Jonas filled a cup of coffee. “When I was twelve, there was this kid at our school—foster kid. But he especially didn’t like me and used to throw around words on the playground. Fraser told me to ignore it, and usually, when he was around, they backed off. So I did. Then one day, he stayed after school and was waiting for me. Dante jumped me, and we got into a brawl. I might have been able to take him, but he had a couple kids with him, and when Fraser came out, I was down. Fraser freaked out and lit into the guys. They took off, but it dug into Fraser. He felt like he’d failed me.”

“He’s the oldest.”

“And a team guy. And I’m not just talking about the SEALs. He’s the guy who kicks the door down and goes in first. This injury, and the capture in Nigeria, has really done a number on him. One of the guys he was with was killed. And the doc he was protecting got shot. I think he feels like he has something to prove. To himself. Maybe to God.”

She’d finished her tea by then, but Jonas’s words sank in. “And Creed. He told me about the fight with Creed.”

“Right. Yeah, that was bad. Back then, he was probably thinking about the kid I tussled with. But Creed is a Marshall now.”

“And Marshalls have each other’s backs?”

“Always. And I think he looks at you as a partner, so I’m hoping you have his back too.”

His words hung in her head as she nodded, then washed her cup and headed out to find Fraser. He was waiting in the Panda, getting a GPS route to Portofino.

“Ready, Natasha?” he’d asked as she got in, that familiar, easy spark to his blue eyes. But she knew the truth.

She knew what he was hiding.
