Captain Fry, who had walked straight to the table where a chart was spread, weighed down with lumps of coral, threw out his arm as if to say ta-dah!

‘Aye, indeed,’ he said proudly. ‘More rats than any other ship afloat, I’ll be bound. Yes, young lady. The rattiest sloop in the harbour, or my name’s not Captain Horatio Fry.’

Frankie stared at him uncomprehendingly, the rats in her peripheral vision making it look as if the captain’s cabin was equipped with a gently moving brown carpet.

‘You’re acting like it’s a good thing,’ she pointed out lamely. His enthusiasm for his ship’s rodent quota had – if you’ll pardon the old-time ship metaphor – rather taken the wind out of her sails.

The captain seemed surprised. ‘It is a good thing,’ he said, looking down at the rats as if seeing them properly for the first time. ‘Rats hate to get wet, you know. The more rats there are, the drier the ship.’

‘It’s very impressive, Captain Fry,’ said Justice soothingly, moving past Frankie and joining him at the table. ‘I don’t think I’ve ever been on a ship with more rats on it.’

He puffed up with pride as if she’d just told him he’d been nominated for the Sea Captain of the Year Award, before pointing down some stairs.

‘You’ll find hammocks slung for you on the lower deck,’ he told them. ‘Don’t leave any of your belongings on the floor now, will you?’

‘Why?’ Joel wanted to know. ‘Is it because you keep a tidy ship and hate mess?’

‘Not really,’ replied Captain Fry, screwing up his long face. ‘It’s just that if you leave anything on the floor, the rats will eat it.’

‘That’s brilliant,’ decided Joel.

‘That’s completely revolting,’ contradicted Frankie, her earlier enthusiasm for a sea voyage evaporating – unlike her bowl of starfish soup, which was still stubbornly puddled on the cobblestones outside the Wandering Walrus.
