Chapter 11

“What was that?” Lucy dropped her fishing pole and hustled to the other side of the boat.

“I broke the pole,” Rose gasped. “I mean, I broke Buddy’s pole. How was I to know it was going to snap in half?”

“And the big one got away.” Gloria peered into the murky water.

“The big one getting away is the least of my worries.” Rose rubbed her finger over the jagged end of the pole. “I’m going to have to buy Buddy a new pole. How can I replace it with another pole? It was one of his favorites.”

“The end is stuck on the front railing.” Gloria wiggled it loose and held it up for closer inspection. “It snapped clean off. We can try to tape it back together.”

“Tape it back together?” Rose took the piece from Gloria. “With what?”

“There’s some tape in the box of goodies the marina gave us,” Ruth said. “I saw it when I was looking for a lighter to light the grill.”

“I’ll start cleaning the fish while you repair the pole and fire up the grill.” Lucy grabbed the bucket of fish and carried it to shore.

Gloria fumbled around in the tackle box Buddy had also loaned Rose and held up a roll of duct tape. “Duct tape, the answer for everything.”

“Except fixing someone’s favorite fishing pole,” Rose said glumly. “I knew I shouldn’t have borrowed it.”

“It’s not your fault.” Gloria ripped off a chunk of tape and began wrapping it around the pieces of pole. “It’s the fish’s fault. Butter Buddy up - tell him his pole almost got the big one.”

Rose sighed heavily. “The stink bait sure did work like a charm. I not only caught catfish, but some bass, too.”

“We have plenty of fish for dinner.” Lucy finished cleaning the fish while Ruth dumped charcoal into the grill.

“I have a special recipe for grilled fish I’ve been itching to try. I found it online. We’ll have to let the fish marinate for a little while. It will give the charcoal time to get going.” Ruth carried the tray of filleted fish inside.

While they waited, the women chatted about home, wondering how Johnnie and Ray were managing Dot’s Restaurant while Dot and Rose were gone.

Gloria suspected Paul was enjoying a couple of days on his own, fishing on the lake and spending time with his children. She popped off the bench seat. “I’m going to give Paul a call to check in.”

She grabbed her cell phone and headed to a quiet spot on the shore. Gloria’s call went directly to voice mail. She left a brief message, telling him they were on a houseboat and having a good time.

Gloria didn’t mention Larry Molson’s death or Liz joining them. Before disconnecting the line, she told him she loved him and if he tried to call back, he might not get through because of the poor cell reception.

She shoved the phone in her pocket and wandered back on board the boat.

“Well?” Ruth asked. “How are things back home?”

“Paul didn’t answer.
