lexander sat down with a groan. It had been a long day. He hadn’t expected it to be this gruelling when he had rushed back to Prith. He had to talk to his executives, calm everyone down, and had to answer the questions asked by the Investigators with Luis Cobian glaring at him from the background. There was no clue as to who had placed the explosives, Cobian had told him grudgingly, but they would do everything they could to find out. Not that Alexander believed him. Cobian had been trying hard not to gloat. He supposed he couldn’t blame him after their last meeting.

The explosion bothered Alexander more than he cared to admit. He had been targeted before, but never as openly, as blatantly, as this. He had his own suspicions about who must have been behind it, but he didn’t share them with the Investigators or with Cobian. After all, it was quite evident that Cobian didn’t give a damn for finding out who had placed the bomb.

He wanted to go home, but he was asked by Cobian to stay to answer a few more questions, and now, he was left waiting in his own office. He had occupied the time by contacting his informant to know if he had any information on any alien invasion, but had only received a bewildered negative and a demand to know why and an angry exhortation to not be an idiot and call him while there was an Elite on the premises. Considering the danger if anyone discovered they were in contact, Alexander had desisted from prolonging the conversation.

Luis Cobian entered the office, Tripp showing him in, his face impassive, but a glint in his eyes.

“Do you want me to stay, Mr. Selwood?” Tripp asked. Alexander had no doubt that Tripp would take on the Elite if he had to, but the last thing he wanted was to get any of his employees in trouble.

Alexander shook his head. “It’s all right, Tripp. Why don’t you go home? It’s late.” Tripp looked torn between his desire to stay and his own exhaustion. “Tripp,” Alexander said. “Don’t worry about me. Please. If you stay, none of the others will leave, either. When you go, tell them all to head home. We’re not finding out anything tonight.”

“All right,” Tripp said. “Good night, Mr. Selwood,”

He gave Cobian a dirty glance as he left. The lights in the outer office went out immediately after.

“What do you want, Cobian?” Alexander asked once Quinn confirmed they were alone. “I don’t think there’s anything more I can tell you. I wasn’t even here when it happened.”

“The Ruler wishes to speak to you.” Cobian said.

“I’m sure,” Alexander said drily, but he was nervous. Why was Cobian asking him? What was going on here? He couldn’t guess what Thaxter’s move was and that made him anxious.

“He’ll be here in five minutes,” Cobian continued, “so, it’s good that you cleared the building.” He held up an object. “Teleportation blocker, so you won’t run away.
