ANDLER LUNGED FORWARD and grabbed Miaxa before she hit the floor. The mella did not push him away this time as she lay unconscious in his arms.

“This is unexpected,” the doctor said.

“She is in denial,” Kordan intoned sadly.

Andler nodded his head slowly as he gazed into the mella’s pain wracked face. Every coremate he knew that suffered from coreshock knew their mate was dead. He had never witnessed anyone in denial. Reluctance in accepting their fate, maybe, but not flat-out refusal. The core would know—

“Prepare the remains for viewing,” the Zenith said. “She needs to see.”

“I’m not sure it’s possible,” Andler said. The remains were so unsuitable for viewing he wasn’t sure he could get them to a presentable state.

“Do the best you can.”

It was the second time the Zenith said that to him this evening. If only repetition would make him believe the words.
